Through BBBS and its programs, inspiring relationships are continuously formed between two people that otherwise may have never crossed paths. And for some Big/Little matches, the bond is so immediate that regardless of how long they’ve been together they become family.
After completing six months in the program, Keazia’s mother, Keondra says, “It didn’t take long before they became use to one another; it was a match made in heaven.” She continued to explain how Brittany has changed not only Keazia’s life, but also their entire family.
Brittany and Keazia both seem to adore and admire one another. Brittany says that Keazia is adorable, smart, sweet and always full of surprises. “I’m certain she loves spending time with me, just as I love spending time with her. She has a beautiful and loving family whom are very supportive,” Brittany said.

This month, BBBS of Mid-Florida has chosen to recognize community leader, Scott Hackmyer, for his work with West Ocala Neighborhood Family Center, Devereux Kids and Marion County Children’s Alliance. Through Devereux Kids, he has devoted his time to engaging community residents, strengthening families and protecting children. Devereux Kids works toward building the capacity of community residents and parents, so they can create strong, vibrant and supportive communities where children feel safer in their homes and community. Hackmyer believes this is important for children so they can develop to their maximum potential. Hackmyer is also a part of Marion County Children’s Alliance, which is now in its 11th year. This alliance was created to bring all of the agencies and organizations together that work with children so they could fill the gaps in services and avoid duplication of efforts.
Hackmyer is very happy to see BBBS of Mid-Florida back in the Ocala community because he said “there has been a terrible shortage of mentoring programs in this community since Big Brothers Big Sisters left Marion County, and any quality program, such as BBBS, that is here to provide support for our children is very welcome.” Hackmyer believes prevention programs save heartache and are much more cost effective than intervening after a child gets into trouble.
